General Houston Questions and Answers

I am taking a vacation to Houston with my wife, who loves to shop.  We would like to
find a reasonably priced hotel that is close to shopping and museums.  Can you give
any suggestions?

You can check out the Holiday Inn Select.  This is an upscale version of the chain hotel that is
a nice change from the normal roadside stop.  It is right next to Upper Kirby, and not far
from the Houston museum district.  As far as shopping, the Marriot Hotel at 5150
Westheimer is close to the Galleria.

Where is the main shopping area in Houston?

The Galleria is definitely the place to go for shopping, at the corner of Westheimer and Post
Oak.  You'll find everything there from Tiffany's to Baby Gap, along with many restaurants,
two hotels, and an ice skating rink.

I'm coming to downtown Houston for a few days on a business trip.  I'm flying into
Houston from George Bush Intercontinental Airport, I'm staying in the downtown
area, and I don't want to have to rent a car.  What is the public transportation like in
downtown Houston?

If you're staying around Main Street between downtown and Reliant Park, there's a new
traffic-free option available to you, the light-rail line.  Of course, there's always the taxi
option.  At present time, the initial rate is $3 plus $1.50 for each additional mile.  But if you're
on a short time schedule, it's almost essential to rent a car, even though traffic is horrible.

What kind of nightlife and entertainment can I expect to find in Houston?

Houston has never really been known for having a heavy entertainment district.  Although, the
area around market square in downtown (which is easily accessible by the Main Street
light-rail line) is definitely up and coming.  You can check out the weekly Houston Press or
the alternative Houston's Other for detailed club information.
