Lake Tahoe Questions and Answers:
Our family of five will be
traveling to Reno / Lake Tahoe in July and staying at the Squaw
Valley Resort. My wife and I have traveled to the area twice
before, and have taken the 3 1/2 - 4 hour drive to the Big Tree State Park in Arnold CA. Is there a closer park where our kids can
see these beautiful trees?
One of the great places to see
the giant redwoods is in the Humboldt National Forest. Still a
couple hours' drive, but BEAUTIFUL. Humboldt Redwoods State Park
is a great place to see the big trees. Here's a great
website for more info: http://www.humboldtredwoods.org/
When
you're in Squaw Valley, be sure to stop at the Squeeze In Restaurant in
historic downtown Truckee for breakfast. They were featured
in the February issues of National Geographic Adventure and in
Powder Magazine too, as well as the San Francisco Chronicle in
March.
Finally, Reno is only about a half hour from Truckee the
kids would enjoy a visit to the Great Basin Adventure and Museum
near downtown (a true desert and mining town type experience).
For lunch in Reno, try EJ's Jazz Cafe on the river walk in downtown. Have a great visit in Tahoe!
What is Lake Tahoe like and
where is it located?
Lake Tahoe is located on the
California-Nevada border and it is a brilliantly blue lake
nestled among rugged mountain peaks. There are towering casinos on
the Nevada side of the lake and the north shore of the lake has
numerous ski resorts.
What kind of ski areas surround
Lake Tahoe?
The Lake is surrounded by ski
areas including: Alpine Meadows - a large family friendly
resort. Heavenly - with 28 ski lifts many consider this the best all
around resort. Kirkwood - popular with snowboarders and a
local favorite. Squaw Valley USA - a world class resort
that played host to the 1960 Winter Olympics.
What is there to do in the
summer?
During the summer, you can
enjoy the nice beaches along Emerald Bay Rd, rent a canoe or
kayak from Ski Run Boat Company or follow one of many good hiking and biking trails. You can pick up maps at the USFS Visitor
Center near the Tallac Historic Site.
Where are some good places to
stay?
If you're budget minded, there
are many motels that line Hwy 50, from Stateline west to the
junction with Hwy 89 which is an area that although is commercial is removed from all the casino activity. If you do prefer the big
hotels, many of them also have ski packages like Caesar's Tahoe
and the Tahoe Sunset Lodge.
What is the transportation
situation like?
Most commercial flights fly out
of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The Tahoe Casino
Express runs shuttles between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and South Lake Tahoe casinos.
