Aspen, overlooking the town, is an athletes mountain,
offering more than three thousand feet of steep vertical drop. Aspen
Highlands, about one mile west of town, has outstanding extreme
skiing and breathtaking views. Buttermilk Mountain, two
miles west of Aspen, provides gentle slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers. Snowmass, twelve miles northwest of Aspen
on highway 82 boasts the longest vertical drop in the USA.

The three wilderness
areas surrounding Aspen offer bountiful hiking trails in summer and early
fall. The Hunter Valley Trail leads through wild flower
meadows and into the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area.
Plenty of heavily used mountain biking routes surround Aspen
Mountain and Smuggler Mountain. Hunter Valley and Sunnyside
Trails provide a challenging single-track loop north of town. The
Montezuma Basin and Pearl Pass rides offer extreme cycling
experiences.
